New EPA Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Lead Law

To Our Valued Clients,

Effective April 22, 2010, federal law requires that contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb more than six square feet of paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and trained to follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Island Wide Kitchens has put in place lead-safe policies and procedures, and all our workers have received certification in lead-safe practices. These measures insure Island Wide Kitchens is a leader in lead-safe demolition and construction as the new regulations take effect.

Effective April 22, 2010 — What RRP means to you...

  • On properties built before 1978 any wood or any painted
surface being repaired, renovated demolished or painted (RRP) is assumed to be
lead contaminated and must be tested. This applies to all painted surfaces
    inside or outside your property.

If Lead is Found…

  • For interior work, the work area must be lead dust sealed and contained for 6 feet of the work area. For exterior projects, the sealing and containment distance is 10 feet around the work area. Along with a HEPA vacuum, specific disposal and wipe clean test methods are required for all interior and exterior projects.
  • At the completion of the demolition, a retest for lead dusting residue is required.
  • Penalties for noncompliance are $37,500 for each infraction.

These new regulations, and the practices they require, will bring any changes to the renovation, repair and painting field. What will not change is Island Wide Kitchen’s commitment to providing its clients with exceptional services. It is important to us that our clients know our ability and trust our dedication to getting the job done right. In preparation for the new EPA regulation changes concerning lead, Island Wide Kitchens has been certified by the EPA as a lead-safe firm.During the transition, many questions about the new regulations and procedures are certain to arise.
